Harvard school of education put together a think tank of brilliant minds called Project Zero and they worked together to come up with some brilliant strategies for teaching students to think. It sounds an awful lot like teaching tools. Here are some authors from that group:
David Perkins - Smart Schools Ron Ritchart - Visual Thinking, Creating Cultures of Thinking, Intellectual Character Tina Blythe - Teaching for Understanding Guide (I would probably start here) Shari Tishman - The Thinking Classroom
I have learned a ton from these books. They are not technically classical, but they say the same things in other words and create a system for doing it right.
